I know I have spent a lot of time focusing on the distance group in this blog, but there is a reason. RallySport distance swimming has taken a beating in the realm of popular opinion these last 4 or 5 years. Since the early 2000's when Cameron Dye and JJ Garcia and many of the younger swimmers were very good in the distance events for RACE, there was a few years where there was not a lot of RallySport swimmers interested in the distance events. I didn't have a lot of triathletes here and so it was not our focus. Then a couple of Olympic Trials qualifiers, one in the 50 and one in the 100 back and suddenly we are a sprint team. I have parents to this day say to me, "my child is going to be a distance swimmer and everyone says you can't coach that".
Well, I am proud of our distance lane. What was once two swimmers is now 11 or 12. There are 4 13-14 year olds with the State mile cut and as of last night, we have 3 boys with the Sectional cut in the mile. I still have coaches saying, "why are you still here, its the mile. You don't have anyone in there". Yeah I do, he just smacked your swimmer around.
What's even better, is these kids like the mile and their distance events. This is what they have chosen to do and so they are going to be great, because it is them driving it.
Jorge has been a great help and I have definately taken a lot from him, but the credit belongs to kids like Eric, Marshall, Liam, Michaela and Ben. They are the ones that have done the work and maybe more importantly, ignored all the talk around them that RACE is a sprint team.
