So I leave Boulder at 3: 00 to try and get to Lakewood for the meet at 4. It is only raining in Boulder, no big deal. On the way, my friend Matt beck from Highlands Ranch Aquatics calls. It's awful down here he says. Now Matt went to UT so he is useless in the snow. He also drives a black Volvo and it has a huge longhorn on the back, so his car barely drives in the snow and he no doubt can see little through the horns (by the way, oooof, sorry bout that National Championship meet Matt. The old man was probably a bit angry).
So naturally, i ignore him and head down route 93. No sooner do I get out of the Boulder limits when it starts dumping and getting nasty. By the time i get to Lakewood it is a full on blizzard. I walk in the door to the meet and it is canceled. Now it must be stated that this was the doing not of Foothills Swim Team, but the city of Lakewood. they shut down the facility on everyone with no warning. So I talk to all the swimmers and head out the dorr. I am 5 min towards home when my phone stops working. no audio. I can dial, i can text, but I can't hear anything. Its a blizzard. I need my phone, for no other reason than to answer all the phone calls that are going to come in about the meet. Uh Oh
So, at this point I am taking the town streets home and so i start looking for a Verizon. Lo and behold I find one. Things are looking up. I go in and explain the problem. Gabi (the Verizon girl) says I can update the software and she has seen that kick on the audio, but it takes 45 min. Let's do it I say. If it fails I'll get a new phone through insurance, but I will have to wait until Monday so its worth a shot. So we plug it in and wait.
Meanwhile, its dumping snow. I wander over to Starbucks and get a coffee, think about a haircut, but they are closed, basically toodle around for 45 minutes or so. i wander back in. 33% upgraded and its been almost an hour. I say, well i gotta get going and Gabi tells me that if I take it off the upgrade, the phone fries. I wait a little longer, 90 min, 37%. Its now 7 o'clock. Not good. We talk for a bit and she decides she's going to gve me a new phone becuase i am being patient. She does that and we switch the info (another 30 min) and I am out the door.
Now its a nightmare outside. I get the bright idea that side streets will be better. Not so much. I almost crash about 4 times on Indiana and the only advantage on side streets is that no one hears you scream like a little girl when you start sliding. I am in the door at home at 8:30. 51/2 hours after I left boulder.....
and there was no meet.
