Slow Down Everyone, You're Movin Too Fast

One of the biggest issues I see in the sport of Triathlon and especially in the swim portion is that people are moving waaay too fast. Not only is their effort too high, but their actually speed and paces are too fast.

We all agree that this is an endurance sport. We also all agree that the base training is the most important piece for an endurance sport, so why does our base speed need to be aggressive. It doesn't, the best in the world go slower than the vast majority of us would ever dream of. I have seen the power files from people like Taylor Phinney and Lance Armstrong and they are not just going easy, they are going slow.

Take swimming now. Not only is it a psuedo-endurance sport, it is also a technical sport. It is close to a skill that needs to be learned. Our bodies learn a skill by repetition and that repetition cannot be done at full speed. Just like hitting a baseball or shooting a basketball, trying to learn it at game speed will not help. Start slow and spend a lot of time going slow. Drills, stroke count, slow, aerobic swimming and even super slow swimming will do more for your end swimming speed than any amount of 100's on 5 seconds rest.

Slow down and you will speed up.
