It was a bittersweet weekend for the Apex athletes in Kona this weekend. Neal Henderson made the trip down in order to guide Apex athlete Trish Downing in the swim (he directs her as she only does backstroke) and support her quest to complete the race as a challenged athlete.
The swim was great and Trish exited the water 12 minutes up on her 2006 schedule. However, the Kona winds proved to be decisive again and she missed the cut off on the bike. A truly valient effort for the hand cyle athlete as the winds make that type of racing truly difficult. Trish has proven to be an incredible inspiration and will no doubt learn and come back even stronger. Check her story out at www.redefiningable.com
The sweet of the weekend was Apex athlete Ellen Pena winning the women's 55-59 age group. Ellen followed her plan to a T. She stayed close on the swim, moved to third on the bike and ran down the field to win. Congrats to Ellen!
Cameron Dye of Apex was racing this weekend in Dallas at the US Open. Cam posted a great effort to take 5th in the race amid a stellar field. It was Ca's third race weekend in a row and he has gotten stronger each week.
