It has been nearly 9 years since the last time I participated in what you could refer to as a a professional sports event. Back then it was Xterra. I was not that good. In fact, I think my career winnings were $250, but I was a professional athlete. I remember at the time joking with a former student, Roger Mason Jr. (now a member of the New York Knicks), that I had become a professional athlete before him. He was still at U Va and he responded by saying something along the lines of his sport being a bit more lucrative than mine.
He was right of course. I "retired" (I always claimed i wasn't good enough to retire) in 2003. So here I am, nearly a decade later, at 37, giving it another go. This time in cyclocross. I am racing the UCI elite race on Sunday at Flatirons Mall. The very best in the nation and among the best in the world will be there. Tim Johnson, Ryan Trebon, Todd Wells and our Colorado boys; Allen Krughoff, Brandon Dwight, the Wizard and others. I am hoping to stay in the race. In other words, not get lapped.
Come see if the old guy can stay in the race and while you are at it, watch one of the most entertaining forms of racing out there. Cross is fast, fun and an interactive crowd is a must. Sunday at 3:30, hope to see you there. http://dbcevents.com/home/
