I got to do some of my favorite things this weekend. I got to coach a rest meet for RallySport Aquatics and I was able to race cross at the State Champs (more on that later)
The meet was the CSI Pioneer Open down at DU. I was looking forward to this for several reasons. We have a fast team this season and we walked into the meet with 19 sectional qualifiers and 5 going to junior nationals. Also, I have been challenging these guys this fall with dryland, tougher sets and some old school RACE speed work. Finally, Jorge had left as our Distance coach and I wanted to see if we were able to continue the success we had had with him.
I have to say, the meet went better than I could have ever hoped for. We started day one by taking second in both Medley relays without our National kids there. Then kids started dropping seconds. We swam tough and we swam smart. We won the women's 200 free relay on Saturday in a meet record that broke our own from 2008 by 3 seconds. a 24.1 and 3 23.8's and 2 of those girls were unshaved and unrested.
By the time the dust had settled we were up to 24 sectional qualifiers and 6 Juniors kids. I could stand here and list the great swims of the meet, but I do not have the time and you do not have the patience. I will say that the RACE swimmers approached the meet as swimmers trying to swim better. Not trying to swim times. It is the secret. Go faster and have a plan to do your best in any race. Do not swim for a cut. That never works.
Congrats RACE. Thanks for helping me love my job more each day. Now off to Junior Nationals in Atlanta, GA. I will keep you posted. Also, follow the team on twitter @RACEswimming
