It is widely said that Boulder is a mecca for endurance sports. Cyclists, Runners and Triathletes flock to Boulder for the variable training terrain, the atmosphere and the altitude. That said, there are very few races in the town of Boulder that attract the very best in the country. This weekend there are two events inside the city limits that are going to play host to not only the country's best racers, but some of the best in world. Oh yeah, I am going to be there too.
The Colorado Cross Classic at the Rez and The Boulder Cup at Valmont Bike Park are UCI2 and 1 races that are among the best in the world. Both of these venues provide incredible opportunities to watch some of the best cyclocross racers in the world. US men like Tim Johnson, Ryan Trebon and Jeremy Powers will take to the courses with some greats from across the pond like Ben Berden and Joachim Parbo. This is a rare opportunity to watch professionals at the top of their sport right here in Boulder. The women's fields are just as impressive and will include Czech National Champion Katarina Nash and US Champ Katie Compton. In addition, there will be great masters racing and incredible food and activities for the whole family. Come eat, drink, heckle and be merry.
Those of you who know me, don't expect to see me at the front of these UCI races. I will be in there mixing it up with these monsters, but my goal is to do my best and have fun. I am nearly 40 and the time is nigh that I move into the Masters ranks, but I have to say, the pro races are fun. Especially the ones here in Boulder. The reason they are so much fun is you. The fans that are lining the run ups and screaming "Hup" at me and all the athletes. The wall of noise is nothing like I experienced as a pro triathlete (although that may have been different if I was in the top 10) and it is truly exhilarating.
So come out and give us racers a taste of European bike racing here in Colorado. Bring your flags, your cowbells, your costumes and your voices. Let's pack the run ups and gravel pit while drinking our fill and enjoying a couple incredible Fall days.
