We look good, don't we. like we know what we are doing. A blue train in sync and blasting through the wind and rain. Ya, we look good.
Well, we were good. We were fast, we were in sync, BUT...
we missed the start by 2 minutes. Yes, 2 minutes.
Last year at the Haystack TT I personally struggled. I couldn't get a rhythm and i just didn't have it. A year later and the story is completely different. Another year with Neal Henderson's guidance and another year of training with great athletes like Cam Dye, Allen Krughoff and Scott Tietzel and i am coming good. Last year I was 3 minutes back of Neal, this year 8 seconds. I was able to go 12th overall and was within 90 seconds of the winner in the 35+ opens. That's a solid field and a good result.
We all piled in the BCSM van and rolled back to the start to prepare for the TTT. Mike Sutter rolled in after solving his morning mechanicals. Curtis came by fresh off his smashing of the 35+ cat 3 field and we were looking good. The rain started and we were a little all over the place. Number pinning, tire pressure adjusting and the time slipped away. Finally, i looked at the watch and noted that to make our 1:35PM start time, we needed to get moving. Well we rolled up to the start/finish at
1;35.40, 40 seconds late it would seem. unfortunately, that wouldn't have been that bad, but the start time was actually 1:34PM. Good work boys.
We hammered off the line and settled into a killer rhythm. It was tense. The roads were wet and the splashback made it nearly impossible to see and i spent 20 minutes spitting dirt and water out of my mouth. We turned on to 75th for the final 4 miles and laid it down. Neal and Mike took their final huge pulls before the turn onto Niwot and Rob, Curtis and I sprinted to the line. I stopped the clock at 23:03. That would have been a 20 second beating of the next closest team.
Oh yeah, we left 2 minutes late, so we were really 25:03. 4th place. oops.
Regardless, Sunday was the most fun i have ever had racing my bike. Might have to try and re-create it on the track.
