What's the point? Have you asked that at your job or with your friends or with your training. I have those days when it feels like no one is listening and no one appreciates you. I've learned a couple things in my time;
#1 "slow down there big fella". Before you go off the handle, think it through. You FEEL like no one is listening and you FEEL like no one cares. It might not be reality and when it flies out of your mouth or off you fingers in a blog or a tweet, it never comes back.
#2 They are listening and they do care. They just aren't always saying thanks when we are listening or when we want to hear it, but that doesn't mean they're not thankful.
I got the opportunity to work with some of the FastForward Sports triathletes tonight. They swim at Rally and Scott, the big cheese over there, asks me to introduce Rally's Aquatics program the first night of the each season. My intention was to head out after the intro, seeing as how it was a long day and I had a couple of things to do tonight at the home office.
I gave my talk and intro and a strange thing happened (sarcasm, sarcasm)...I got into it. I was getting to talk swimming and people were really into it. I am fortunate enough to coach a lot of really good athletes. They are great swimmers and committed trainers, but they don't always get bright eyed about swimming. After all they are logging a lot of time in that pool. However, these guys were wired. Some were pumped to swim, some were excited to hear some new things and some were wired because they were really nervous. As I finished the demo and was getting ready to hand them off to Allen and head out the door, a couple of women started to ask me some questions. They were nervous and pretty beginning swimmers. I forget sometimes how scary the water is. So, I got all the newbies in a lane together and I started teaching...and the time flew by. Before I knew it, 40 minutes was gone and I was having a blast. It was the most fun I have had as a coach in a while.
I wanted to take a minute and thank those 6 or 7 FastForward swimmers for;
#1 reminding me to "slow down there big fella"
#2 Reminding me that you can always connect and help and that makes it all worth it.
