Second Chances

It was said to me the other day on deck at Rally..."man, this is like the pool of second chances." The person who said it implied that it was something special. I have never felt like that it is.

Why as a society have we moved away from the idea of a second chance or more importantly, why are we so bitter when someone gets one. With my team, RallySport Aquatics, and with coaching, I have been told over and over again that if you give second chances, people will walk all over you. I laugh. I know one person in my life, she remains an anonymous bar merchant, that gave me a second chance and I'm not sure anyone would refer to her as being taken advantage of.

Life is full of mistakes that we have made because of pride, hubris or just plain stupidity. The choice should haunt us for the rest of our lives? I do believe that there are things that will always remain unforgivable, but I refuse to accept that people cannot change. I have had swimmers quit and return to drop ungodly amounts of time. Swimmers who have come back after 1o years away and friends that have hurt me grow into those that I count on the most.

Keep an open mind and an open heart. People learn and grow all the time. Creating an environment for them to do so, may be the most important thing of all.
