I listened to one of my masters swimmers tout the early demise of Michael Phelps yesterday as he was beaten in the 200 freestyle. I believe the exact quote was "it wasn't the suits, maybe it was the strippers and the dope". They went on to lament Bowman rant on pulling Michael from competition.
Phelps then turned around and went a world record in the fly in a leg suit and an unshaved chest and back. He's a stud. Plain and simple.
I wish my swimmers would idolize this guy. He made a mistake. What did he do? Who did he blame? He blamed himself and apologized...right away. No excuses, no it wasn't my faults, no this is why its ok....none of that. I did it , it was childish, I screwed up, I'm sorry. Most people his age don't know how to say they are sorry.
After biederman beat him in the free, Phelps said, i got beat. he was better than me. He let his coach talk about the suits. Furthermore he went on to say in response to Bowman's pulling him from competition until the suits are outlawed, that my coach picks my meets and picks my races. Not him, not his Mom, not his entourage, his coach. Bowman also was the one that told him he would be fine in the 200 fly in the leg suit and unshaved.
Phelps-"Is this alright coach?"
Bowman- "You'll be fine, don't worry about it"
Phelps-"ok coach"
If you trust your coach, listen to them. If you don't, find one you trust. It works for the best swimmer ever.
